The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has opened an immediate investigation into allegations that some athletes presented multiple birth dates during the 2025 African U18 and U20 Championships held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of World Athletics has requested clarification regarding a number of Nigerian athletes reportedly under investigation for age-related discrepancies.

In a statement released in Abuja and signed by AFN Secretary-General Israel Inwang, AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa reaffirmed the federation’s stance against age cheating, stressing that the matter would be thoroughly examined.

He announced that an investigative committee would be named on Monday, December 8, to determine the facts and recommend sanctions for any athletes or coaches found guilty.

“We must protect the integrity of the sport and the image of our country, Nigeria,” Okowa said.

“I have remained an advocate of fairness and adherence to the rules in age-grade competitions, and I do not want to believe that any of our athletes or officials would be involved in such violations. We will address and resolve the issues before us.”
