Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali said Saturday’s third-place game between Nigeria and Egypt ended in a goalless draw in regulation time because both teams were careful about making a mistake.

Nwabali was the hero, saving two spot kicks, as Eric Chelle’s team beat the Pharaohs 4-2 on penalties to emerge third at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Chippa United goalie was awarded Man of the Match for his heroics.

Speaking after the game, the 29-year-old described the win as a collective effort.

“It was a very difficult match against a great Egyptian team; Nobody wanted to make a mistake,” he told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He noted that composure helped him during the penalty shootout.

“I stayed calm, read the takers and trusted my instincts; Thankfully, it worked for us,” he said.

He said teamwork helped the Super Eagles emerge victorious.

“This victory came from collective effort. The defenders were incredible, and everyone stayed united,” he stated.

He added that his individual recognition was secondary.

Nwabali “Being Man of the Match feels good, but winning the bronze medal for Nigeria matters more.”
