The players of Nigeria’s senior men’s football team, the Super Eagles, have officially gone on strike due to unpaid bonuses after their fourth game in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Super Eagles have emerged as the top team in the ongoing AFCON, winning all four of their matches and scoring the most goals in the tournament. They have transformed from a struggling team into major contenders for the AFCON title.
However, this momentum has hit a significant roadblock. According to prominent Nigerian/BBC Sports journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has failed to pay the players and staff their win bonuses for all four games played in Morocco.
In response, the players have taken a stand. They will not travel to Marrakech on Thursday ahead of their quarterfinal match against Algeria on Saturday if their demands are not met. Furthermore, they are refusing to train.
Okeleji stated on the X app, “Three-time AFCON champions Nigeria have a troubling track record of self-sabotage. Officials made promises to the players and coaching staff before the AFCON2025 tournament.”
He highlighted that, “Players and coaching staff are still awaiting their AFCON2025 bonus payments. Win bonuses from matches against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique have yet to be received. The squad remains focused but will not train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday unless this issue is resolved.”
According to our source, Tobi Adepoju, an anonymous official from the Nigeria Football Federation, indicated: “The funds have been processed from the CBN to individual banks. Players and officials will receive their bonuses as soon as the process is finalized.”
