The Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi, has disclosed that over 38,000 admission requests were received for the 7,794 available slots for the 2024/2025 academic year.
Prof. Maikudi made the disclosure during the matriculation of new 100-level regular students for the 2024/2025 session yesterday at the university’s main campus, Gwagwalada, Abuja.
She said the matriculation was an academic ritual that is used to formally integrate new students into the university system. “The ceremony will not only confirm and cement the students’ admission, it will also allow the students to be introduced into the ways, rules and regulations of the university,” she stated.
The VC said the signing of the matriculation oath seals the deal for both the students and the university, adding that any breach of the oath amounts to disobedience or disregard of the regulations, and such act has severe consequences on the recalcitrant student, including suspension or expulsion from the university.
She informed the students that UniAbuja has zero tolerance for all acts of indiscipline, including obnoxious acts such as cultism, sexual harassment, examination misconduct, and squatting in hostels among others.
“As new students, let me give you a word of advice. Much as you will be encouraged to conduct your legitimate activities and pursue all legitimate goals unhindered, the system also expects you not to obstruct others or breach the rules in the process of meeting your own needs.

“All the rules and regulations governing the conduct of students in the university are documented and available for you to study and acquaint yourselves with them. The published student handbook is expected to be your guide because ignorance cannot be an excuse for any unbecoming conduct or infractions in the system,” she said.
She urged the new students to freely mingle and treat one another as brothers and sisters in line with the core values of unity and scholarship.
“Our university community truly reflects the Nigerian federation as all sections of the country are represented in both staff and student composition.
“Hence, it is incumbent on us to promote corporate harmony by avoiding actions capable of polarising us along the fault lines of religion, ethnicity and agenda, among others.”
She promised that the school would continue to provide, within the limit of available resources, the necessary infrastructural and learning facilities that will facilitate teaching and other academic activities for the benefit of students.
“This is in addition to provision of sporting and other recreational facilities to the students across our campuses,” she promised.
She encouraged the parents and guardians to remain resolute in their support and sacrifices for the education of their children and wards, adding, “We are confident of the university being able to play its noble part to enable the students realise their educational aspiration.”
