ADC presidential primaries: Atiku floors Amaechi in Imo

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar defeated former minister of transport and erstwhile governor of River State, Rotimi Amaechi in the presidential primaries of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) conducted in Imo State

Chairman of the ADC National Presidential Primary Electoral Panel, Imo State, Eko Atu, who made the announcement, yesterday, said Atiku recorded an overwhelming victory in the exercise in the 305 political wards and 27 council areas of the state.
Atu said that Atiku polled 52,200 votes, while Amaechi scored 7,659 votes to finish second. Mohammed Hayatudeen, got 1,121 votes to come third.

He thanked ADC members and the leadership of the party in Imo State, under Prof James Okoroma, for providing an enabling environment which enabled the electoral panel to perform its statutory responsibility.
He said: “Atiku’s triumph in Imo positions him for eventual victory in the state, which is the stronghold of ADC in the South East”.

Atiku also emerged winner of the ADC presidential primary election conducted across wards in Abia State after he polled 25,153 votes to defeat his closest rival, Amaechi, who secured 18,339 votes in the exercise. Hayatu-Deen came third with 3,264 votes.

The result was announced, on Monday, by the Returning Officer, Onyebuchi Chukwu, following the collation of votes from various wards across the state.

Reacting to the outcome of the exercise, the Abia State Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Francess Olisa Ogbonnaya, commended party members for their massive turnout and peaceful conduct during the primary election.

Ogbonnaya described the exercise as orderly and transparent, noting that members participated freely across different parts of the state.

The primary election, which was monitored by security agencies, was conducted peacefully in several local government areas of Abia State without any reported disruption.
