The Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has reaffirmed its commitment to enhanced border security and seamless trade facilitation following a strategic visit to the Maigatari border corridor in Jigawa State.

The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs (DC) UU Adamu, undertook a familiarisation tour of the Maigatari border area on 13 February 2026 as part of efforts to reinforce operational oversight, deepen inter-agency collaboration and strengthen stakeholder engagement across the Command’s jurisdiction.

This was disclosed in a release signed by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Chief Superintendent of Customs Tahir Balarabe.

During the visit, Adamu was received by officers at the border station alongside representatives of sister security and regulatory agencies, the Jigawa State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, the Chairman of Maigatari Local Government Area, and community leaders.

The engagement provided a platform to consolidate institutional cooperation and foster stronger ties with the host community in support of legitimate cross-border trade.

Addressing stakeholders, Adamu commended the community and partner agencies for their sustained support, stressing that effective border governance depends on synergy, intelligence sharing and coordinated enforcement. He described Maigatari as a strategic trade gateway and assured stakeholders of the Command’s resolve to facilitate lawful commerce while safeguarding national security.

As part of the assessment tour, Adamu inspected operational activities at the border station and visited the control centre of the Nigeria Immigration Service, where cross-border movements are monitored in real time to strengthen border management processes.

The Controller also toured the Maigatari Free Trade Zone, engaging with its management team on strategies to enhance functionality through improved ICT deployment. He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment, under the leadership of the Comptroller General of Customs , Bashir Adewale Adeniyi to support initiatives that boost trade efficiency and investment inflows.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Maigatari Local Government Area, Hon. Usman Na’Allah, welcomed the Controller and pledged the continued cooperation of the local government and residents in advancing secure and orderly border operations.

The Jigawa State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Aminu Babura, reiterated the state government’s determination to revitalise the Free Trade Zone, while the Managing Director, Abdulaziz Hadejia, disclosed that additional infrastructure projects are underway to attract increased investment and commercial activity.EATL Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Emmanuel Okon, said the project emerged from Nigeria’s local content drive after indigenous companies were encouraged in 2020 to build in-country technical capacity.

“Without dependable calibration, even advanced meters produce inconsistent narratives. With it, we align on a unified truth,” he said.

He said the facility incorporates traceable standards, automated data capture, and documented uncertainty budgets certified to international benchmarks, allowing regulators, auditors, and commercial partners to rely on a single verified dataset.

“This facility promises streamlined revenue reconciliation and compelling investment cases, as Nigerian oil producers will now experience reduced measurement uncertainties,” said Okon. “It empowers regulators and oil field operators to demonstrate precision, while communities receive transparent insights into production, royalties, and environmental impacts. Such clarity fosters social license, which is the essential and ongoing consent that sustains exploration and production,” he added.

The project was executed under NUPRC oversight with support from the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board and other stakeholders, ensuring certificates are recognised for statutory reporting and compliance.

Industry analysts expect the development to improve transparency in royalties and taxes, tackle crude oil theft, and enhance investor confidence through verifiable production figures.

The facility is also projected to develop technical hubs within the host community, create hundreds of skilled jobs, and deepen domestic technical expertise in petroleum measurement technology.
