Adamawa fixes July 13th for LG elections

The Adamawa state Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) has set July 13th, 2024 as the date for the conduct of local government elections across the 21 local government areas of Adamawa state.

Announcing the date, the state chairman of the commission, Mohammed Umar Jabu, said the commission has commenced earnest preparations and is putting logistics in place for a smooth conduct of the elections. He said the commission has submitted budget for the elections and it is looking forward to a credible, free and fair elections in the state.

This was made known by the state chairman, Adamawa State Electoral Commission, Mohammed Umar Jabu, on Tuesday, in Yola, Adamawa state.

Jabu said, all Electoral Commissioners have been assigned their respective responsibilities and all political parties have agreed on the date for the elections and have also indicated readiness and willingness to participate in the elections.

Mohammed said, “We will do our best in conducting a free, fair and credible elections like it has never been done before

“My pedigree as a former INEC official, an organisation which has conducted free and credible elections in the past, will help me conduct an acceptable and reliable elections.”

He adds that, “There are about 19 active political parties in Adamawa state and that they have all shown interest in the electoral process but we cannot say for sure whether they would all participate in the elections until we see how the forms for the elective offices are purchased.

“The forms for various elective offices are up for sales, the chairmanship form is fixed for N250,000 (Two hundred and fifty thousand naira only) while the form for the coucilliship is fixed for N50,000 (Fifty thousand naira only).
“The prices are fixed by the Adamawa state electoral laws and we cannot change it.”

Responding to the questions of whether the date for elections was too close for the conduct of good elections, Jabu said, “We are not mandated to follow the federal law that insisted on ninty days notice before the commencement of elections but we are satisfied that all concerned parties in the elections are comfortable with the date fixed and they have all indicated readiness to participate in the elections.”

Earlier on, the Adamawa state chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) Bello Babajo, has tasked the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), to do its due diligence in adhering to the elections time table in order to deliver a credible elections in the state. He also urged all political parties to actively participate in the process.

Babajo speaking on the preparations for the elections said, “Based on what we see on ground, we have a belief that this election will be free, fair and credible.

” I also want to call all political parties to come out and purchase the nomination forms to contest for various elective positions in the contest..
” We are fully ready and equipped to partake in the elections, we urge all to play the game according to the rule as Adamawa people are peace loving.

“As the time table is out, we pray the SIEC will do its due diligence in following the guidelines and time table.”
