ANIOMA CULTURAL FESTIVAL

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and retired General Lucky Irabor are among the distinguished guests set to grace the inaugural Anioma Cultural Festival on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Garki, Abuja.

Organised by the Izu Anioma Towns Union, Abuja, the festival marks the first bi-annual celebration of the rich history, traditions, and resilience of the Anioma people from the Delta North Senatorial District, Delta State.

Governor Oborevwori, known for championing cultural preservation and peace, has been a strong advocate for the promotion of Anioma culture through his M.O.R.E. agenda, which emphasises peace, unity, and progress. He has lauded the efforts of the Organisation for the Advancement of Anioma Culture (OFAAC) in sustaining annual cultural showcases that celebrate Anioma dances, crafts, and traditions. His presence at the festival highlights his administration’s commitment to blending cultural pride with developmental growth and peaceful coexistence in Anioma land.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, known for his longstanding support for cultural and political causes in the Niger Delta, is also expected to attend, signalling broad regional support for the festival. Retired General Lucky Irabor, former Chief of Defence Staff and a respected figure in the region, will add prestige to the event, embodying the strength and resilience that characterise the Anioma people.

President of the Izu Anioma Towns Union, Luke Enelichi, outlined at a recent media briefing that the festival will feature diverse cultural displays from the Aniocha, Ndokwa, Ika, and Oshimili groups. The revered “Akwa Ocha” (white cloth), which symbolises purity, honour, and hospitality, will be a standout feature.

The festival will also honour prominent Anioma sons and daughters with awards for excellence and patriotism, including the Union’s Patron, Senator Ned Nwoko, who is a leading advocate for Anioma interests in the National Assembly.
