Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), said it has employed 200 academic staff as directed by the Governor and Visitor to the University, Dr. Alex Otti, to bolster the institution’s workforce.
The university has also honoured 66 of her students who won medals during the state’s maiden Tertiary Education Games, held in November, in Umuahia.
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the university, Rt. Hon Agwu U. Agwu, made the disclosure during the Council’s 159th Regular Meeting/maiden Town Hall meeting.
Agwu, a former Speaker of the Abia State House Assembly, said the employment exercise, which was done in a very transparent manner, was in fulfilment of the directive of Governor Otti.
On the honour done the students who won laurels for the university, Agwu said the Council is student-centric with the vision to oversee the university as one where knowledge of science, information, communication and technology, social and management sciences, humanities and arts, as well as entrepreneurial and vocational skills are harnessed to help solve the problems of the nation.
He disclosed that the maiden edition of the town hall meeting was aimed at discussing and addressing outstanding matters of common interest that would impact industrial peace and advance the university.

The forum, Agwu stated, also afforded the participants the opportunity to assess what has been done and those not yet accomplished, with a view to addressing them.
Agwu listed the myriads of academic and administrative problems his Council met when it came on board, in November, 2024, adding that some of the problems have been addressed.
“Council set up various committees to attend to staff welfare, discipline, and other matters affecting the university, interfaced with various staff unions on their demands, in order to sustain existing industrial harmony.
“We equally sought and obtained approval from the state governor and Visitor to the university, Dr Alex Otti, for the recruitment of another set of non-teaching staff to fill the vacant positions.”
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe Okeudo, said that the university was happy to have a Governing Council led by Hon. Agwu, and Dr Alex Otti as Abia State governor and their Visitor. He expressed joy over the achievements recorded in the university in the past two years and gave the credit to Governor Otti.
At the town hall meeting, staff unions were represented by Chidi Mba of ASUU, Chika Onuoha of NASU, Chudi Madukairo of the Senior Staff Association (SSANU), Ugonna Emma Ugoani of the Students Union, and Dr (Mrs) Christiana Eze, Principal of the Staff School.
