The Igiriuku community, Owaza, Ukwa West Local Government of Abia State has decried the decayed infrastructure in the area, blaming it on lack of good leadership that will present their concerns to Government.
This is as the community has selected some people to run the affairs of the area following the death of their traditional ruler.
Some youths of the community who spoke to Sunday Sun on Saturday said their community has been neglected over the years as a result of lack of good leadership to present the problems of the community to government.
“All the roads built by the Chief Onyema Ugochukwu-led Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), have gone bad without any attempt to draw the attention of government to the deplorable state of the roads.
“Apart from the poor condition of the roads in the area, Igiriuku does not have the semblance of an oil-producing community as no meaningful projects is sited in the area, yet they drill oil from the community daily.”
They said something drastically must be done to ameliorate the situation which they said is getting out of hand.
Meanwhile, the community has selected a new leadership to run its affairs and to liaise with government and oil companies operating in the area for the overall development of Igiriuku.
Announcing the new leadership at the community’s hall, Chief Friday Nwaelele, the Paramount Chief of Eziogwu and the chairman of the Igiriuku council of Paramount Chiefs, said the selected officials would be in acting capacity till the community will have a new traditional ruler who would then appoint new leaders for the community.
“With this selection by the representatives of the four villages that made up Igiriuku, the former leadership has been dissolved,” he said.
Those selected to run the community include Chief Nwosu Bright Chukwuma, chairman; Uche Ogbonna, vice chairman; Ernest Aliri, Secretary and Kelechi Nwelele, youth leader.
Others are, Lucky Nwagwu, vice youth leader; Chimaobi Ezekiel, secretary, youth wing; Uchechi Ogbuji, women leader, Nwadiuto Kenneth, vice Mrs. Ulochi Chionye, Secretary, Women wing.
Speaking after the selection process, one of the Paramount Chiefs of Igiriuku, Chief Horsfall Ebere commended his people for their peaceful disposition during the process.
