Abia North: Senator Kalu intensifies school projects, launches free healthcare initiative, sends constituents abroad for training

By Kenneth Udeh, Abuja

The lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has continued to demonstrate a broad, methodical, and results-driven approach to constituency development, with his recent far-reaching interventions spanning education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and global capacity building.

Since his election to the National Assembly in 2019, Kalu’s stewardship has been defined by measurable, people-focused initiatives that are steadily reshaping the socio-economic landscape of Abia North.

His development model reflects a deliberate blend of infrastructure expansion, human capital investment, and social welfare programming.

The focal point of his agenda is a sustained commitment to education, anchored on both infrastructure and support systems. Over the years, the former Abia State Governor has facilitated the construction of more than 100 schools across the five local government areas of the senatorial district—a landmark achievement that has significantly improved access to basic education, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Beyond physical infrastructure, Kalu’s interventions in the education sector have been comprehensive. His office has consistently provided Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) textbooks, school uniforms, and school bags to pupils across the zone, ensuring that no child is denied quality education due to a lack of basic learning materials.

This integrated approach not only boosts enrolment but also enhances the quality of teaching and learning outcomes.

Further consolidating these gains, the lawmaker recently facilitated the distribution of desks to several primary schools, aimed at improving classroom conditions and promoting a more conducive learning environment.

Beneficiary schools include Okweji Primary School, Ozuabam; Ndememe Community Primary School, Ndememe; Ndi Okereke Primary School; and Ahuma Primary School in Abam.

Kalu noted that these interventions reflect his enduring belief that every child deserves to learn in comfort, dignity, and an environment that fosters academic excellence.

By simultaneously addressing infrastructure deficits and material needs, he has effectively positioned education as a cornerstone of sustainable development in Abia North.

Complementing these domestic interventions is a strong emphasis on human capital development through international exposure and specialised training. In a strategic effort to equip constituents with global competencies, Kalu—who chairs the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC)—has facilitated the participation of several Abia North indigenes in high-level training programmes abroad.

Currently, Offor Basil Chiadikaobi from Umunneochi Local Government Area and Igwe Samuel Isaiah from Bende LGA are in China undergoing training on “Opening-Up and Economic Cooperation for Belt and Road countries.”

Their participation underscores a growing engagement with global development frameworks and provides them with exposure to international best practices in economic policy and cooperation.

Similarly, in response to the increasing importance of digital skills in the global economy, the Senator created opportunities for advanced technical training. Iheanyi Ebony Inyamah from Arochukwu LGA and Okorie Dandy Chukwu from Bende LGA, like other previous beneficiaries from Abia North, are presently in China participating in a specialised cybersecurity training programme.

Kalu explained that these initiatives are designed to position beneficiaries to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s technological and economic advancement, noting that the future belongs to societies that invest in knowledge, innovation, and digital capacity.

These programmes form part of a broader educational pipeline facilitated through his office. Several students from Abia North are currently studying Medicine and Surgery in South America and Europe, while others are pursuing MBA and PhD programmes in China.

In addition, numerous beneficiaries are enrolled in tertiary institutions across Nigeria under various scholarship and support schemes. Collectively, these interventions represent a sustained investment in intellectual capital, leadership development, and long-term socio-economic growth.

In the healthcare sector, Senator Kalu has also rolled out one of the most expansive constituency-based medical interventions in recent years. In partnership with the National Health Insurance Scheme, he has facilitated the enrolment of over 500 constituents into a one-year free medical treatment programme, effectively eliminating financial barriers to accessing healthcare.

The initiative is both comprehensive and strategically structured, covering beneficiaries across all five local government areas of Abia North. Under the scheme, enrollees are entitled to access medical services at no cost from a wide network of accredited healthcare facilities, including tertiary, secondary, and primary institutions.

Key facilities participating in the programme include the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia and the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, both of which serve as major referral centres with advanced medical capabilities. Other notable participating facilities include Living Word Hospital, St Anthony’s Hospital Ltd, and Blossoms Women and Family Specialist Hospital, which provide services ranging from general surgery and internal medicine to obstetrics, gynaecology, and orthopaedics.

To ensure inclusivity, several private and community-based healthcare providers across rural areas have also been integrated into the programme.

This decentralised structure guarantees that residents in remote communities can access quality healthcare services without the burden of travel or financial constraints.

The healthcare programme covers a broad spectrum of services, including general surgery, internal medicine, laboratory diagnostics, pharmaceutical care, dental services, and optometry. By removing cost barriers and expanding access points, the initiative addresses one of the most critical challenges faced by constituents: affordable and accessible healthcare.

Importantly, the distribution of participating facilities across Bende, Umunneochi, Isuikwuato, Ohafia, and Arochukwu LGAs reflects a deliberate effort to ensure equitable healthcare delivery. Kalu emphasised that the initiative is particularly targeted at rural dwellers, who are often the most vulnerable, enabling them to access essential medical services within their immediate communities.

There are about 100 hospitals where beneficiaries can access care under the scheme. Some of these include:

  • Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia

  • Healing Cross Hospital, Umuahia

  • Madonna Catholic Hospital, Umuahia

  • Mendel Hospital, Aba

  • Living Word Hospital, Aba

  • Police Hospital, Umuahia

  • Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Uturu, Isuikwuato

  • Uzondu Polyclinic, Amaekpu, Ohafia

  • Tochi Hospital and Maternity, Uzuakoli, Bende LGA

  • General Hospital, Ohafia

  • Christ the King Health Services Ltd, Ngodo Isuochi

  • 143 Battalion Clinic, Ovim Barracks, Isuikwuato

  • Nicom Hospital, Ihechiowa, Arochukwu

  • Beatitudes Mediplex and Kidney Centre, Umuahia

  • Amara Jane Hospital and Maternity, Umuahia

  • Blessed Haven Hospital, Ogbor Hill, Aba

  • Calif Specialist Hospital, Osisioma

  • Delta Hospital Ltd, Aba

  • Eleos Specialist Hospital, Umuahia

Feedback from beneficiaries has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing relief at the elimination of out-of-pocket expenses for treatment. The programme is widely regarded as a practical demonstration of responsive and people-centred governance, directly addressing a critical need within the constituency.

Across all these interventions, a consistent governance pattern is evident—one that prioritises tangible outcomes over rhetoric. From constructing over 100 schools and equipping them to facilitating international training opportunities and delivering free healthcare to hundreds, Kalu’s approach reflects a comprehensive and multi-sectoral development strategy.

His initiatives not only respond to immediate needs but also lay a solid foundation for long-term socio-economic advancement. By investing in education, empowering youths with global skills, and expanding access to healthcare, the Senator is fostering a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready Abia North.

As these programmes continue to expand and deepen, they reinforce a broader legacy of strategic intervention and inclusive growth, firmly positioning Orji Uzor Kalu as a central figure in the ongoing transformation of Abia North Senatorial District.
