Abia North : Elders tackle police over Ohuabunwa

Nigerias-national-assembly

Elders of Arochukwu in Abia State have accused police authorities of leaving suspects in electoral violence and manipulation of results during the February 23 Presidential/National Assembly elections in the town.

They specifically accused the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Abdulmajid Ali and his counterpart in Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Anthony Ogbizi, of not doing anything in the matter.

Chief Okoronkwo Emenike, who spoke on behalf of the elders, described as disturbing the decision to allow the suspects to walk free, despite the fact that the person who tore election results, and others who seized ballot boxes and wrote results in favour of the PDP candidate had confessed to the crime and said they did that for him.

One Dr. Ibe, two aides of Ohubunwa and an electoral officer are currently detained by the police. While Ibe was said to have tore election result, two orderlies of the senator were alleged to have carried out various degrees of electoral malpractice.

An INEC official, who was arrested for alleged result falsification, illegal thumb-printing of ballot papers and other related matters, is still being held in custody.

Daily Sun gathered that a DPO and inspector invited for interrogation, also, over the incident, made useful statements to the police.

Insisting that Ohuabunwa, whose aides are suspects, should be questioned, Emenike said Arochukwu residents were being compelled to believe there were attempts to shied the suspects.

Said Emenike: “We are worried that those who flaunted gun during the election, thumb-printed ballot papers for PDP, and even tore election result sheet are walking free. It means some people are above the law.

“We were happy when we heard that the case was being handled by the DIG Operation and DIG CID, but as it is now, nothing has been done. This is unfair and unacceptable.”

The elders called on the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, not to allow the matter be swept under the carpet.
