Abia Labour Party holds congress, elects new officers

From Okey Sampson, Umuahia

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has held its State Congress in Umuahia, with Hon. Peter Azubuike emerging as the State Chairman and Chuks Akanmadu as State Secretary through consensus.

Others elected at the congress were Emenike Iroegbu, Publicity Secretary; Joy Ngozi, Treasurer; and Ben Oti, Organising Secretary, among others.

Speaking during the congress, the leader of the party and Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, described the exercise as peaceful and a signal of a new era of unity in the party.

Governor Otti added that the new state party officials would be taking off in a smooth manner and in the new secretariat.

“This is the beginning of a new era. Gone are the days when somebody will be pulling from one direction and another will be pulling from another direction; now we will all pull together.

“One thing you can take for granted is that, like we have always done, we will support our party and the new leadership of the party.

“Already, you have a secretariat that has just been described as befitting and if there is anything that you need, please feel free to let us know.”

Otti, who said they wanted a smooth take-off of the new party leadership, congratulated the new officials on their emergence.

The Chairman of the State Congress Committee and Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Hon. Acho Obioma, had earlier said the congress followed successful ward and local government congresses held on Thursday and Friday last week, respectively.

He said the processes were peaceful and transparent, adding that aspirants emerged through consensus across positions.

The newly elected Chairman of the party in Abia State, Hon. Azubuike, said his mission was to lead the party to win every part of the state in 2027.
