The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Chibuike Emmanuel, of Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, identified only as Chinyere.
The surname, age and address of the deceased had yet to be established as of press time.
Emmanuel was reportedly rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by operatives of the Awkunanaw Police Division at about 6:30 p.m. yesterday, September 21, 2026, following information that he had allegedly killed his girlfriend.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect allegedly killed the woman on Saturday, September 19, following an argument between them. The suspect was said to have wrapped her remains in a nylon bag and locked them inside the toilet of his apartment.
However, the offensive odour from the decomposing body reportedly alerted neighbours, who forced the door open, discovered the remains and apprehended Emmanuel before the arrival of the police.
The victim’s decomposing remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to trace and notify her relatives.
During preliminary interrogation, police said the suspect confessed to the crime, alleging that the incident followed an argument between him and the deceased over accusations concerning who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
According to the police, Emmanuel said he struck the woman on the head with a pestle during the argument, resulting in her death. He allegedly thereafter wrapped her remains and dumped them inside the toilet.
The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the incident.
The command said the suspect would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Giwa also cautioned members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends about their movements and exercise caution over people they visit or spend time with.
