Former House of Representatives member, Sam Onuigbo, has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms, urging governors to ensure increased revenues translate into better living conditions.
Onuigbo, who spoke at a news conference in Abuja, said the administration had recorded progress in climate action, economic reforms and the fight against insecurity.
He commended Tinubu’s early push for climate investments, noting the President’s participation in global sustainability meetings and efforts to implement the Climate Change Act.
According to him, the operationalisation of the Climate Change Fund, development of Nigeria’s carbon market and investments in mineral processing and green industrialisation were steps towards positioning Nigeria in the emerging green economy.
On security, Onuigbo said the Federal Government was making progress, particularly in the South-East, where normal economic activities, including Monday markets, had resumed in many communities.
“There are still pockets of insecurity, but the Federal Government is pursuing the fight with focus and determination,” he said.
He called for the prosecution of individuals supporting criminal activities, insisting that “anyone found to be supporting or sponsoring criminal activities should be identified and dealt with in accordance with the law.”
Onuigbo, however, challenged state and local governments to account for the increased revenues accruing to them.
“It is not enough to talk about increased revenue. Nigerians must see the impact in their communities,” he said.
He urged governors to prioritise projects that directly affect citizens, particularly those in rural communities.
“Resources meant for grassroots development must get to the grassroots,” he stressed.
Onuigbo said local governments remained the closest tier of government to the people and should be empowered to drive development.
He, further expressed optimism that Nigerians would benefit more from the ongoing reforms if all tiers of government embraced accountability and ensured public resources were deployed for the people.
