In a vibrant celebration of scientific excellence and innovation, Community Secondary School, IgbohEtche has emerged as the winner of the 2025 edition of the NLNG Science Quiz Competition, outshining seven other schools in a keenly contested final.

The competition, which held in Port Harcourt, with the theme: “Renewable Energy Solutions,” attracted secondary school students from across Rivers State.

The event marked the climax of a three-stage contest, comprising the Championship Round, Science Project Exhibition and the Grand Finale. In the Senior Secondary 2 (SS2) category, Community Secondary School, IgbohEtche distinguished itself with a blend of precision, scientific understanding and confidence. Their performance reflected a strong grasp of the core principles of renewable energy and the role of science in building a sustainable future.

In the Science Project Exhibition, which was introduced last year to enrich students’ practical engagement with STEM, Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School claimed first place. They were followed by Bonny National Grammar School (Senior) and Community Secondary School, Kira Tai, who placed second and third, respectively, showcasing innovation and real-world problem-solving approaches.

Meanwhile, in the Senior Secondary 1 (SS1) category, Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori (Khana LGA), took first place after a highly competitive round. They were closely followed by Niger Delta Science School, Obio/Akpor, in second place, and Government Secondary School, Abuja, in third.

The competition also saw participation from other strong contenders, including Government Secondary School, Eneka, Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Port Harcourt, and additional entries from the schools ranked across the top eight. Speaking during the Grand Finale, Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to education, sustainability, and youth development.

“The world is shifting towards cleaner, greener energy. NLNG is proud to be part of this transition, not only by exporting LNG and supplying LPG to homes, but by investing in the scientists and innovators of tomorrow,” she stated.

She further emphasised that the competition has positively impacted over 200 public schools since its inception, underscoring NLNG’s belief in the potential of young Nigerian minds to contribute meaningfully to science and technology when given the right platform.

Representing the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Tam Job Inisefiekabo, who spoke on behalf of Dr. Azibaolanari Uzoma-Nwogu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, described the theme as timely and relevant. He stressed the importance of preparing students to confront global challenges such as climate change and energy insecurity through education.

Also present was Dr. Peters Nwagor, Chairman of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Rivers State Chapter, who called for equipping students with the necessary skills and creativity to drive sustainable progress.

Originally launched in 2008 and reintroduced in 2020 after a six-year hiatus, the NLNG Science Quiz has evolved into a cornerstone of science education in the state. With the inclusion of the Science Project Fair, it continues to provide a platform where science meets innovation and education meets opportunity.
