Rainstorm has destroyed buildings and other facilities worth millions of naira at Federal Government College , Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
Our Correspondent gathered that the incident occurred on Friday evening as heavy downpour accompanied by windstorm ravaged almost all the buildings in the college.
Facilities affected include fence at Girls hostel, Basic Science Laboratory, classroom blocks for JS1, JS2, SS2 , Administrative buildings and Vice Principals
office.
Other facilities destroyed by the rainstorm are the school e- Library where set of computers have been damaged, Solar panel water pump, water storage tanks at different locations in the college and the generator house where a tree fell on the roof and damaged entire power house and staff quarters
In a viral video made available to Journalists in Uyo at the weekend, female students were seen crying and running helter skelter looking for where put their heads and escaped from the tsunami.
Meanwhile , the incident has compelled management of the school to postpone resumption date for JS1, JS2, SS1&2 so that the facilities can be replaced by the federal government before the students resume.
A statement issued on the Parent Teacher Association platform signed by the chairman Dr J J Etim and shared with our Reporter in Uyo informed parents not to bring their wards/children who have not returned to the college till further notice .
The statement reads
“This is to inform all parents that their children/Wards who have not return to the College should not return till further notice.
“Only Students of examination classes JSS 3 and SS 3 should return.
“There had been rain storm that has affected all the buildings and facilities in the College. In view of the above, no more resumption tomorrow except for students of JSS 3 and SS 3. Parents should comply with this directive please.
Treat as matter of importance.”
In another short statement to allay fears of parents regarding the safety of their wards in the rainstorm mayhem, the PTA executive assured parents that few students who were in their respective hostels during the incident were safe .
“Greetings dear esteemed parents. We are pleased to inform you that both students and staff are very safe. It is natural to panic after receiving news of the disastrous rainstorm.
“Rest assured, staff members on ground whose roofs were blown away including the Director/Principal ignored their flooded homes and water -soaked belongings , went in the rain and amidst the windy storm to check on the students and ensure their safety.We really thank THE ALMIGHTY for it could have been worse but he intervened.”
