Former Secretary General of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Mr Anthony Sani, has said that he liked most of the bills moved by the National Assembly for the amendment of the 1999 Constitution, but quickly added that some of the bills are not needed in amending the constitution.
There are bills that have passed the second reading at the National Assembly for the proposed amendment of the 1999 Constitution.
However, Sani, in a statement on Friday, said, “I like most of the bills for amendment of the 1999 constitutions which can bring about sea change in our polity except very few that require reconsideration.”
“For example, there is no need for separate commission to conduct elections into all the local government. What is required is for INEC to conduct all the elections for all the three tiers on the same day in order to reduce cost and prevent band wagon effect.”
“There is no need for separate local government police. This is because in states which are diverse, state police or local government police can become part of the problems instead of the solution when some of them take sides in the event of communal clashes.”
“There is no wisdom in any increase of justices of the Supreme Court, especially when regard is paid to the fact that bigger America has 9 justices in the Supreme Court that performs better than that of Nigeria which has 21 justices. More distressing is the fact that the NASS is not bothered by cost.”
