Paramount ruler of Tiv land, Tor Tiv, and Chancellor, the University of Benin, Orcivirigh Prof James Ayatse, has called on President Bola Tinubu to seriously consider the establishment of a national internet backbone in the Nigerian universities to facilitate the development of modern technologies for effective teaching and research purposes.
A statement signed by the Special Assistant to Tor Tiv on Media and ICT, Freddie Adamgbe, said that Tor Tiv made this call in Benin, Edo State, at the 48th convocation ceremony of the University of Benin.
The Chancellor lauded President Tinubu for giving priority to the education sector in his new hope agenda despite the myriad of challenges and uncertainties in the timelines of academic attainment and urged him to proactively and pragmatically deal with the unwholesome issues.
The Tiv Monarch, however, expressed happiness that despite the tough economic realities, the University of Benin led by its indefatigable Vice Chancellor, Prof Lillian Salami, and with the support of the Edo State Government and Tertiary Education Fund had achieved academic excellence and all-round development that made it one of the most sought after universities in the country and even beyond.
The monarch congratulated the graduands and urged them to be proud as products of a system that places high premium on excellence with adherence to the best global practices and in turn translate their training by being exemplary in their conduct as role models.
He thanked the University of Benin community for the prevailing peace and tranquillity, which paved the way for meaningful development and encouraged them to own the institution and contribute their quota to its progress.
