The arrival of the 5G network is expected to usher in an unprecedented digital revolution.

5G network is an upgrade from the popular 4G network and brings more smarter devices, better data storage and retrieval, and broader information circulation. The 5G network is set to improve connectivity not only between individuals but also between computers, objects, and apps. It is also capable of allowing more users to connect to a network at a given point. This kind of congregation empowers many business owners at the same time providing equal opportunities without discrimination.

It is hard to imagine an industry that hasn’t benefited from the digital revolution. Small and large B2B sectors, online entertainment, SME & MSMEs, and e-retail have advanced massively from this overhaul. One of the great milestones of digital unnovation is the launch of the 5G network.

The roll-out of 5G in the country is a very big confidence booster to Nigeria’s aspirations for growth and the enthusiasm surrounding the launch of 5G is truly empowering.

5G set to power even the remotest parts of Nigeria with internet connectivity. And it promises game-changing improvements for MSME financing in the country. This ubiquity of the internet will drive Nigeria’s economic growth.

The 5G network is the bright ray of sunshine that MSME financing in Nigeria needs right now. It is expected to significantly increase mobile network capacity over 4G, enabling more users to connect to the network than ever before. The efficient and timely flow of finances and access of knowledge to all has huge benefits for any business. Most of all, the 5G network will bring this efficiency and ubiquity of knowledge.

5G does more than just create a faster radio network. Instead, it works by bringing together many technologies that had emerged since the advent of 4G and connects them to people, machines, and global cloud infrastructures to create an enhanced solution.

It’s no surprise then that 5G networks will serve 40% of the globe by 2024. They can offer companies a chance to run more effectively and efficiently than ever.

By 2025, 5G technology may support as much as £3.5 trillion worth of products and services in industries such as education, entertainment, retail, healthcare and transportation, potentially sprouting new cottage industries driven by start-ups and small businesses.

This is why 4 out of 5 business leaders, analysts and technology professionals believe 5G will drive small business growth, with SMEs gaining increased productivity, efficiency and ease of access, forecasting SMEs to become more globally competitive.

In their Mobility Report, Ericsson projected that by the end of 2025, there will 2.6 billion subscribers to 5G, consisting 65% of the global population and generating 45 percent of the world’s total mobile data traffic.

Increased productivity and the emergence of new industries are one of the many advantages of 5G. By allowing of new and existing technologies such as the Internet of Things (loT), big data, autonomous vehicles, smart cities and augmented & virtual reality to reach new levels of potential, 5G has the ability to significantly boost the Nigeria’s economy, directly increasing revenue for businesses.

Mrs. Lynda Saint-Nwafor, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, MTN Nigeria, explained that the adoption of 5G technology would accelerate operational efficiencies for businesses in the country.

Saint-Nwafor said 90 percent of the addressable market for 5G spanned six key industries; manufacturing, government, energy/utilities, healthcare, media/entertainment and transportation/logistics.

She said that for businesses, 5G provided total independence from public networks, high and reserved capacity, enhanced indoor and outdoor coverage, and a high level of security and control to access service infrastructure equipment, systems, and services.

She stated that 5G was designed to connect virtually everyone and everything together, including machines, objects, and devices, via increased speed, low latency, higher capacity, and innovation.

She noted that the future of business hinged on the use of artificial intelligence for decision making, smart offices, and high connectivity via 5G.

“5G is poised to offer innovation that would change our lives.” It would engender smart manufacturing, smart metering and maintenance, smart cities, better route and traffic management, an enhanced experience, and a breakthrough in tele-health.“Particularly for manufacturing, it would enable automation for production and factory operations, allow remote monitoring and inspection, reduce operational costs, and drive competitiveness,” she said

Benefits of 5G for small businesses

Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Capacity Enhancements: Each new “G” offers enhanced speed. However, the 5G takes it to a whole new level by improving both enhanced broadband and capacity requirements.

When tested under perfect laboratory conditions, 4G tops out at about 1 gigabits per second. 5G, on the other hand, completely surpasses 4G’s ideal laboratory situation with an impressive 20 gigabits per second.

Even with great coverage and speed, though, insufficient capacity will still result in reduced speeds and frustration for everyone. It results in the glacial service nicknamed “5 bars of nothing.” As companies have grown and expanded the technology they use, the demands on traditional 4G have stretched it to its limit. Previous generations of cellular solutions were not equipped to handle the increased loads of the new and emerging technologies.

5G tackles traditional cellular service problems by addressing the two critical components for an improved mobile experience: increasing both speed and density. Both of these together create an impressive performance across enterprises of all industries. With 5G speeds, enterprises can move significant amounts of data, including simultaneous data transfers, without network issues. They can start to plan for a truly universal wireless user experience, eliminating physical cabling, and reducing their infrastructure costs while improving employee satisfaction and connectivity.

Massive IoT and Connectivity

5G offers a higher device capacity than previous versions to handle the needs of the modern-day property.

As companies use more and more devices to run effectively and efficiently, traditional networks are overly burdened and cannot handle the increase in loads. Because of today’s 4G limitations, companies are limited in the number of devices they can run concurrently.

5G offers the connectivity that businesses need both now and in the future. It can support an estimated one million connected devices per .38 miles.

Not only can the network handle a larger number of devices, but it can also support simultaneous data transfers within the network that usually require multiple networks.

Low Latency and Ultra-High Reliability

Latency refers to the gap between when data is sent and when it is received and acknowledged.

Technology has always come with a certain amount of lag, and it has long been accepted as a minor annoyance of technology. Think about, for example, watching a livestream of a football game. It will always be a second or two behind what is actually going on in the game.

As more critical activities have come to rely on technology, latency periods have become more than just a minor inconvenience. In healthcare, where a surgeon is relying on technology to perform remote surgery, this gap is critical to ensure the surgeon’s movements are not affected by network latency.

Latency is especially an issue for companies that utilize IoT to run their business. 5G improves their functionality and safety by lowering latency. It can support the necessary applications with significantly lower latency.

Ultra-high reliability increases 5G availability so that technical applications and processes can be assured of consistent network services availability.

In short, 5G provides a substantial performance increase over 4G LTE. It can support additional devices at a speedier data rate and reduced latency.
