56th convocation ceremonies: UNILAG graduates 16,506, 617 bag First Class

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to graduate a total of 16,506 students during its 56th convocation ceremonies, with 617 students bagging First Class degrees.

This was revealed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folasade Ogunsola, during a press conference on Wednesday held at the institution’s Senate Chamber to outline activities for the convocation ceremonies.

Prof Ogunsola disclosed that Umeozor, Chukwuzubelu Benedict, of the Business Administration Department, emerged the 2024/2025 Overall Best Graduating Student and Best in Humanities with a perfect CGPA of 5.00, while Oloton, Deborah Isiuwa, who graduated with a CGPA of 4.91 in Architecture, is the Best Graduating Student in the Sciences for the year.

Giving a breakdown of the convocating students, the Vice-Chancellor said: “A total of 1,211 students will bag First Class and Distinction categories of degrees at the 56th convocation ceremonies of the University of Lagos.

“The number is made up of 617 First Class honours and 92 Distinctions, all in the bachelor’s degree category, and 502 Distinctions in the postgraduate category. A total of 10,584 graduating students will receive first degrees or diplomas, while 5,922 others will receive postgraduate degrees.”

She further stated that: “4,543 graduated in the Second-Class Upper category; 3,910 are in the Second-Class Lower Division; 1,023 are graduating with Third Class; 69 finished with Pass and a total of 330 have degrees that are not classified (from the Faculties of Pharmacy, Dental Sciences, Health Professions and Clinical Sciences).”

According to her, 479 students in the School of Postgraduate Studies will bag Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) certificates, out of which 41 made Distinctions.

Ogunsola further said 148 will graduate in the master’s degree category, with 429 having Distinctions, adding that 119 will bag Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in various disciplines, among others.

The line-up of activities for the week-long convocation ceremonies, which will commence on Friday, 16 January and end on Friday, 23 January 2026, includes a Special Jumat service at the institution’s Central Mosque; commissioning of the UNILAG Multimedia Library Studio (a state-of-the-art facility funded through a World Bank Centre of Excellence fund); the convocation lecture titled “Maximising Nigeria’s Demographic Dividend through Urgent Education Reform for Global Competitiveness in the 21st Century”; and the congregation for the award of first degrees, diplomas, certificates and prizes to graduating students across all faculties.

Others include the conferment of emeritus professorships, distinguished professorships, gold medals and honorary doctorate degrees on deserving individuals; a long service award and luncheon; and a concluding convocation thanksgiving service at the Chapel of Christ Our Light, University of Lagos, Akoka.
