38 years after, Etsako LG honours Dele Giwa with essay competition

The Executive Chairman of Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State, Hon. Solomon Obomighie, has promised to develop education, especially among the young ones to better their lives and prepare them for future endeavours through the Dele Giwa’s Inter-School Essay Competition.

The council boss said the essence of the competition was to bring up students who will impact positively on the development of the society.

He stated this at the maiden Dele Giwa’s Inter-School Essay Competition held in Fugar, the headquarters of Etsako Central Local Government Area.

He noted that the event would be annual, explaining that the grand finale of the competition was in commemoration of his ideals in the practice of journalism.

“The competition is meant to immortalise a great son of his local government who paid the Supreme Price for ideal journalism devoid of colouration, but for true and investigative journalism.”

The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State council, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, commended the initiative of the council and promised the union’s partnership with the local council to promote the idea.

Comrade Alenkhe who was represented by the Treasurer of Edo NUJ, Comrade Solomon Obozunya, urged journalists to adhere to the ethics of the profession and ensure they always balance their stories in line with the cardinal principles of fairness, balance and objectivity.

The winner of the essay competition in the junior category was Oshomokhai Kenneth from Saint John Secondary School with a cash price of N150,000, the second position went to Idegbo Elisha representing Fugar Mixed Secondary School with a cash price of N100,000, while Fidelis Abada from Pioneer Comprehensive College emerged third with a cash price of N50,000.

In the senior category, Patrick Stone of Pioneer High School, took the first position going home with a cash price of N200,000; the second position went to  Apekhena Stephen representing Ogbona Secondary School with a cash price of N150,000, while Agbor Grace from Oseme Secondary School came third with a cash price of N100,000.
