Eastland Electricity Distribution Limited (EEDL) has raised concern over rising cases of meter bypass and energy theft in Ebonyi State.
The alarm was raised following the discovery of over 300 confirmed cases of energy theft in the first quarter of 2026.
The company said the cases were uncovered through intensified inspections backed by documented evidence.
In a statement, the company’s Head of Communications, Mrs. Patience Ezeagu, described energy theft as illegal and dangerous, warning that it undermines electricity supply and damages infrastructure.
She noted that the practice contributes to transformer overload, frequent outages, higher operational costs, and safety risks including fire and electrocution.
The EEDL also condemned reported attacks on its personnel during enforcement operations.
The company said offenders have been penalised in line with regulations, with further measures including disconnection and prosecution where necessary.
Ezeagu stressed that sustainable electricity supply depends on responsible energy use and urged residents to desist from illegal connections.
She called on communities to support efforts by reporting suspicious activities.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to delivering reliable electricity while protecting compliant customers.
