An unspecified number of people were trapped in a collapsed two storey building still under construction in the metropolitan area of Kano, in Kano State.
The affected building, located along Beirut Road in the state capital, may have collapsed as a result of the heavy rain which occurred in the state capital, on Monday.
The building, which is at the heart of a GSM phone market, fell at about 3pm, a time human traffic within the vicinity was at its peak.
A witness told reporters that the structure, which was under construction, collapsed not just on people, but also some cars which were parked within the area. A Red Cross official told journalists that, at least, three victims were rescued and taken to the hospital in the state.
As of press time, rescue operations by the state Fire Service and the Kano State Emergency Management Agency were in progress. No death was reported, so far.
Meanwhile, the Kano State government has suspended the swearing-in ceremony of commissioners-designate earlier scheduled for today, in honour of victims trapped in the collapsed building.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, the governor, while sympathising with the victims, ordered an intensified rescue operations to get to those trapped in the rubble.
