The second edition of the Atanda Musa National Cadet Invitational Table Tennis Tournament is to hold at the Lagos Country Club from Monday 8th – Tuesday 9th of September.
Musa, one of Africa’s greatest table tennis players known for his backhand play and loop, said the initiative is his way of giving back to the society. Although based in the United States, the former international star returned to Nigeria to inspire and mentor the next generation of players.
“The reason I’m hosting this event is because I live in the U.S. and I’ve seen what basketball, baseball and handball players are doing over there giving back to the community,” Musa explained. “So I decided to come back home and give back to the community.”
The two-day competition will feature young trainees from across Nigeria, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their skills and pursue their dreams in table tennis. Musa, who once represented Nigeria in several international tournaments, including Spain, noted that his coaching centers on dedication, skill development, and preparing players for professional success.
This year’s edition, organizers say, promises to be bigger and better than the last tournament in 2024. In partnership with the Lagos Country Club Table Tennis Section, Musa has included educational support for participants.
“We have organized many things for the young kids going back to school,” Musa revealed. “We will present 100 school bags, notebooks, art materials, and other supplies alongside a one million naira cash prize. The aim is not just to build champions in sports but also to ensure they have a strong educational background.”
Alhaji Tunji Lawal, chairman of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association, described the initiative as a worthy legacy. “This tournament is about bringing upcoming kids in the table tennis family up to speed about the game. Atanda Musa started here in Lagos before playing for Nigeria and becoming a legend. It’s a great opportunity to have this tournament hosted where it all began,” Lawal said.
With a mix of competition, mentorship, and educational support, Musa hopes the championship will shape future stars that can carry Nigeria’s table tennis legacy to new heights.
