Convener of the New Nigeria Group (NNG), Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, has announced plans to relaunch the socio-political organisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with a focus on promoting credible polls and influencing voter choice.

Speaking with journalists in Enugu, Ohuabunwa said the group’s renewed push would centre on voter education and encouraging Nigerians to critically assess the pedigree, competence and character of those seeking public office.

He explained that the vision driving the group dates back over a decade.

“Actually, God has given me a vision which I now call the New Nigeria Group. That vision was given to me in 2009 when I wrote a book titled Nigeria at 50: Time for the Evolution of a New Nation. I shared my thoughts on how Nigeria can be governed to be the kind of country we are all looking for in that book,” he said.

“But in 2019, I had a revelation that what I wrote in that book should not just be for other people, that I should also be part of the system to see it realised. We started talking about the New Nigeria Group before it became popular, and since then, we have remained focused on that vision,” he added.

Ohuabunwa said the group is driven by a dual objective of building a productively developed nation and fostering unity across the country.

“My vision of a New Nigeria is aimed at creating a first world nation; and to become a first world nation, it must be a productively-driven nation. GDP must grow, per capita income must grow, education must grow and all the factors of production must grow phenomenally.

“The second is to promote strong unity in Nigeria, make it a country that everyone would love to belong to… a country where you are treated fairly irrespective of your religion, tribe, or status, and where government caters for citizens from birth to old age,” he said.

He added that the relaunch of the group would position it to play an active role in the 2027 elections by mobilising voters and promoting accountability among political actors.

“As we go back to 2027, the New Nigeria Group is coming back, we will ask the right questions, look at their pedigree, what they have done, and use that to determine what they can do. These are what we will focus on to support the political system in 2027,” he said.
