Four members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPC), yesterday, defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The quartet – Adamu Wakili,Umar Zakari, Umar Datti and Abdulhakeem Ado, who are from Kano State, announced their defection, at the plenary over by the speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, cited the crisis in their former party as the reason for their cross carpeting.
Wakili in his notice of defection, which was read by Abbas, noted that there have been “persistent leadership crises in the NNPP resulting in internal divisions.”

Consequently, just like the three others, stated that “I find it imperative to align with a platform that guarantees inclusion and I hereby notify the House of my intention to join the African Democratic Congress.”
Similarly, Ahmadu Kabiru representing Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency of Zamfara State and Emeka Chinedu, representing Ahiazu/Ezinihitte/Mbaise Federal Constituency of Imo State, announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) to the All Progressives Congress ( APC), at Wednesday’s plenary.
In the run-up to the 2027 general election, there have been a wave of defections in the House, with several lawmakers switching allegiance to other political parties, other than the ones, on which platform they were elected into Green chamber.
While the defections have drastically depleted the number of Labour Party (LP) and NNPP members in the House, the APC and the ADC have been the major beneficiaries.
