A new statewide opinion poll has indicated a significant shift in Kwara State’s political landscape for the 2027 governorship election with voters placing greater emphasis on competence, security and economic performance than on religion or identity politics in determining who succeeds Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The survey, conducted by the Africa Polling Institute, revealed growing support for inclusive and performance-driven leadership, amid signs that many residents are becoming less receptive to divisive political narratives.

According to the report, 93 percent of respondents said they would support a qualified candidate regardless of religious affiliation, while only a small minority maintained that religion should determine voting choices.

The findings also reflected strong interfaith political tolerance across the state. About 90 percent of Muslim respondents said they would support a Christian governor, while 98 percent of Christian respondents expressed willingness to vote for a Muslim candidate.

Political analysts say the development could reshape calculations for the 2027 governorship race, especially as succession discussions gradually gain momentum within the state’s major political blocs.

The poll, conducted between May 4 and 11, sampled 5,050 respondents across Kwara’s 16 local government areas and 193 wards through Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI).

Beyond religious considerations, the survey showed that voters are more concerned about governance issues directly affecting their daily lives.

About 72 percent of respondents said they want a governor capable of addressing insecurity, while 67 percent identified economic growth and job creation as key priorities. Another 62 percent said a proven leadership track record and performance capacity would strongly influence their decision in the 2027 election.

Respondents ranked insecurity, electricity supply and unemployment among the most pressing issues requiring urgent government’s attention.

Observers say the findings suggest a growing voter appetite for a leader capable of fostering consensus across religious and regional divides, while sustaining stability and economic growth in the state.

The poll also recorded strong voter enthusiasm ahead of the election, with 96 percent of respondents expressing interest in the governorship contest, while 89 percent confirmed possession of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The report concluded that voters in Kwara are increasingly prioritising practical leadership solutions over emotional or identity-driven politics, signalling what analysts describe as a possible shift toward a more issue-based electoral environment ahead of 2027.
