Nasarawa West is emerging as a focal point in the 2027 gubernatorial race as the All Progressives Congress (APC) begins preparations to select its standard-bearer to succeed Governor Abdullahi Sule.
Daily Sun gathered that the contest has drawn aspirants with diverse profiles, reflecting a mix of political experience, technocratic competence, youth appeal, and grassroots integration. Analysts, party stakeholders, and residents alike are keenly watching who among them can unite the zone, resonate with voters, and sustain APC’s dominance in 2027.
Historically, political power in Nasarawa West has been concentrated around Keffi and its environs, producing governors, senators, ministers, and influential party leaders. Yet, emerging voices within the APC are urging a more inclusive approach that accounts for equitable representation across the zone’s local government areas, grassroots reach, and the capacity to mobilise winning coalitions.
Political stakes and voter expectations in nasarawa west
Nasarawa West, with its mix of urban centres, rural communities, and ethnic diversity, presents a microcosm of Nigeria’s political complexities. Analysts note that voters are increasingly issue-driven, valuing competence, visibility, and inclusivity over mere political pedigree.
“People want leaders who have impacted their lives, not just those with titles,” said a political observer, Muhammed Abdullahi. He added that “Whether through education support, health outreach, or consistent community presence, voters remember tangible actions.”
This dynamic, pundits say, place a premium on sustained grassroots engagement and leadership narratives that resonate across demographic divides. Pundits noted that political credibility is now measured not only by accomplishments at the state or federal level but also by consistent, visible service at the local level.
APC aspirants: profiles, strengths, and challenges
Muhammed Musa Maikaya, is one of the aspirants. He stands out for his deep-rooted presence and sustained engagement across Nasarawa West. Stakeholders emphasise that he is more than a unifying figure; as he is increasingly seen as a consensus aspirant.
Having aspired to the governorship in 2019, Maikaya came close to the nomination but patiently supported the consensus candidate, which eventually produced Governor Abdullahi Sule. Since then, he has remained steadfast in the APC, never defecting even during periods when political fortunes were unfavourable. Observers note his consistency and dedication to party principles as rare among the aspirants.
A political analyst noted that “Maikaya’s patience and loyalty to the party over the years mark him as a mature candidate. He has consistently prioritised APC’s cohesion over personal ambition, which is a quality that earns respect across wards and LGAs.”
In addition to his party loyalty, Maikaya has maintained strong grassroots connections through community engagement, philanthropy, and support programmes, including education assistance, health outreach, and youth empowerment initiatives. Unlike many aspirants who have held government positions, Maikaya is primarily a businessman, funding his own campaign. Observers view this as a sign of independence and direct accountability to the electorate.
A senior party chieftain from Nasarawa West remarked that “He is the only aspirant consistently spending his own resources on political mobilisation, not relying on government structures. That makes him relatable and trustworthy to the grassroots. Youth leaders also highlight his approachability and connection to local realities.”
Emmanuel Ukey, a youth group coordinator, said Maikaya “listens, he visits communities, and he supports initiatives that directly affect our lives. That kind of presence matters, especially for young voters.”
However, critics point to his lower national profile relative to some aspirants with legislative or federal experience. Yet, party stakeholders counter that in Nasarawa West, longstanding trust, grassroots visibility, and personal integrity are more decisive than national recognition.
Observers largely agree that Maikaya’s combination of patience, party loyalty, personal investment, and grassroots integration positions him as a credible candidate capable of uniting the zone and attracting broad-based support.
Senator Aliyu Wadada, is a sitting senator, representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District. Wadada brings legislative experience, national exposure, and strategic relationships across APC structures to bear. Supporters argue that his track record in policy and constituency development positions him for gubernatorial responsibility.
Some grassroots observers feel Wadada’s visibility is concentrated in Abuja and political forums rather than rural areas. “He’s respected, but we rarely see him on the ground,” said a local ward leader. Critics note that his technocratic image, while credible, may not generate the emotional connection increasingly vital for electoral success.
Other News
Dr. Ahmad Musa Muhammed’s reputation as a technocrat, with expertise in governance and policy, and as a former Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, appeals to voters who prioritise structured problem-solving. Civil servants, educators, and development practitioners often cite his analytical approach as a key asset.
Sources indicate that his community visibility remains limited. “He is respected for his work, but voters want to feel his presence, not just hear about him in reports,” said Daniel Mathias, a youth leader from Karu LGA.
Analysts also warn that intellectual credibility must be matched by grassroots mobilisation.
Dr. Faisal Shuaibu, is a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Care Development Agency. His personality resonates strongly with younger voters and urban professionals. His campaigns focus on innovation, education reform, digital economy, and inclusive governance, earning him support from youth groups and professional associations.
Observers note that his appeal is strongest among specific demographics rather than across the entire zone. Rural voters and older constituencies may perceive him as visionary but less connected to everyday realities. Political commentators suggest that converting this energy into broad-based support will require intensive grassroots structuring.
Architect Tukur is known for his expertise in planning and design, as he appeals to voters focused on infrastructure, urban development, and strategic governance. His supporters praise his practical mindset and problem-solving skills.
Despite professional credibility, Tukur’s political footprint is limited, particularly in rural wards. Analysts argue that technical competence alone may not translate into wide electoral support without expanded grassroots networks.
MS Haruna is a former Executive Director of NASENI, who brings extensive leadership experience and technocratic expertise in science, engineering, and innovation. Stakeholders note that his work in promoting industrial development and technological capacity aligns with the zone’s aspirations for modernisation and employment generation.
While his national profile is respectable, observers note the need to strengthen local presence in key wards and build political alliances across communities to translate professional reputation into electoral traction.
Opposition interests
Beyond APC, the 2027 contest may see new entrants from other parties. Jonathan Gbeifi (SDP) and Barrister Muhammed (ADC) have publicly declared interest, signalling that APC aspirants may also need to consolidate internal unity to prevent vote fragmentation.
Traditional Council Member, Alhaji Danladi Ismail said: “The candidate must represent all of Nasarawa West, across ethnic and religious lines. History matters, but fairness matters more.”
Notably, Governor Abdullahi Sule, during a stakeholders’ meeting at Government House, Lafia, where Toto stakeholders paid him a courtesy visit, acknowledged the community’s desire for equitable representation. Addressing their royal father’s demand for local inclusion, the governor remarked, “Toto has sons and daughters who are competent to lead. I am a product of zoning, and fair representation is critical for party unity and democratic growth.”
Strategic considerations and the path to consensus
The APC faces a delicate balance, respecting historical dominance by Keffi while ensuring equitable representation across Nasarawa West’s multiple local governments. Political observers argue that strategic micro-zoning, ensuring no community feels marginalised, will enhance cohesion and strengthen electoral prospects.
In the words of a veteran APC strategist, who does not want the name in print, noted that “the APC needs a candidate who can unify, earn trust over time, and carry people into the future. That is the choice that resonates with voters and withstands political storms. It will be wise to micro-zone it to other parts, especially Toto and Nasarawa Local Government, as these are the two local governments that have consistently supported the APC in the past election years.”
Last line
As deliberations continue, the selection of the APC flagbearer for governorship in Nasarawa West will not only shape the 2027 gubernatorial contest but also define the political trajectory of the zone. For voters seeking inclusive representation and meaningful leadership, strategic choice is not optional, it is imperative.
