The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday convened a meeting with leaders of political parties at its headquarters in Abuja to unveil and deliberate on a new electoral framework ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting brought together party chairmen, secretaries, and key representatives, including Senator Nenadi Usman for the Labour Party, as well as Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said the updated guidelines were developed in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, stressing that stakeholders could no longer operate under outdated regulations in a rapidly evolving electoral environment.

He noted that the new framework is designed to strengthen transparency, credibility, and efficiency in the conduct of the 2027 general elections.

As part of early preparations, the commission also outlined timelines for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, with online pre-registration scheduled to commence on August 18, 2025, followed by in-person registration from August 25, 2025 and the exercise ends on August 30 2026.

INEC further announced plans for a nationwide voter register revalidation exercise aimed at eliminating duplicate entries and removing deceased persons to improve the integrity of the electoral roll.

The development comes amid ongoing debates over electoral reforms, particularly provisions in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, including the Senate’s stance on real-time electronic transmission of results to INEC’s Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

Meanwhile, political activities are intensifying ahead of the polls, with President Bola Tinubu already endorsed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a second term, while opposition figures are exploring coalition options to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
