Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan (SAN), has said the forthcoming area council poll in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and two off-cycle Ekiti and Osun governorship elections would be the litmus test for next year’s general elections.

His position was contained in his remarks at the opening ceremony of its ongoing two-day Induction and Strategic Retreat for newly appointed Chairman, National Commissioners and Resident Electoral Commissioners, in Lagos.

According to him, the elections would serve as important testing grounds for refining voter registry management, election logistics and deployment of technologies such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and INEC Results Viewing (IReV).

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to delivering elections that would be free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive, as it intensifies institutional preparations towards the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan noted that the commission is deliberately strengthening its leadership capacity, operational systems, and institutional coherence in response to rising public expectations of the electoral process.

He also claimed that early planning, strategic coordination, and strict adherence to the rule of law would be crucial to the credibility of the 2027 general elections. He noted that while the 2027 polls remains INEC’s ultimate goal the commission would first successfully navigate several key electoral milestones like the off-cycle governorship and Area Council elections.

His words: “These elections will serve as important testing grounds for refining voter registry management, election logistics and the deployment of technology such as BVAS and IReV.”
