2026 WCQ: South Africa awaits FIFA verdict on Mokoena’s yellow card controversy

South Africa

South Africa, topping Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, is awaiting a verdict regarding the misuse of Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena, BSNSports.com.ng has sourced.

Mokoena was serving a one-match suspension following his second yellow card against Zimbabwe last year but featured in South Africa’s 2-0 victory over Lesotho, who, after realising Hugo Broos’ mishap, are demanding Bafana Bafana’s three points be revoked and awarded to Leslie Notsi’s outfit.

Both the Lesotho Football Federation and the Nigeria Football Federation have sent a written protest to FIFA regarding the yellow card saga.

In The South African news publication on Thursday, Bafana Bafana awaits a decision, which, if deemed enough to penalise, is likely to result in a three-point docking – World Cup qualifying disqualification isn’t a concern.

Meanwhile, Broos kept it blunt on Tuesday when asked about the investigation, saying, “I cannot comment on that at this point. It is an issue that will be resolved in the coming days. So, I ask that you not expect any further information from me. No comment.”
