Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani has paid tributes to the victims of the bomb blast at the Ikeja Cantonment, on the 23rd anniversary of the tragic incident.

On January 27, 2002, accidental detonation of a large stock of high explosives at the cantonment caused an explosion that reverberated across Lagos and spread panic among the citizenry.

The explosion and its aftermath killed at least 1,100 people and displaced over 20,000.

In an X post on Monday, Sani said, “On this day in 2002,a bomb exploded in a military formation in Lagos. Over a thousand people died, over five thousand were injured and thousands remained missing till this day.

“I believe the survivors are somewhere reading this post. A nation that has consistently experienced tragedies remembers nothing.

“May the souls of the departed continue to rest in peace.”
