19 passengers die in Jos – Bauchi road crash

No fewer than 19 persons lost their lives and several others wounded when the vehicles in which they were travelling collided with articulated trucks.

According to the Superintendent Route Commander Public Education Officer (SRC), Peter Longsan, the crash involved four vehicles, two trailers and two mini buses (Ford Galaxy).

Longsan said the accident occurred just after the military checkpoint along Jos – Bauchi Road in the outskirts of Jos, the Plateau State Capital 12:12 am.

The FRSC official said in a statement that the victims included 17 males and 2 females, adding that 10 adult men died on the spot, the injured victims were taken to General Hospital Miyabarkate, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) Jos, and Plateau State Specialist Hospital for medical attention.

The statement said, “Today 23rd December 2025, FRSC Plateau State Sector Command carried out another rescue operation following a road traffic crash that occurred after the military checkpoint along Jos – Bauchi Road in the outskirts of Jos, Plateau State. The crash occurred at 0012 hours (12:12 am), it involved four vehicles, two trailers and two mini buses (Ford Galaxy).

“19 people were involved, 17 males and 2 females. 10 adult men died on the spot, the injured victims were taken to General Hospital Miyabarkate, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) Jos, and Plateau State Specialist Hospital for medical attention.

“Eight corpses of the deceased were deposited at Plateau Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital morgues, while 2 of the corpses were claimed by the officials of the NURTW for internment.

“The rescue was jointly conducted by FRSC, the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Military Officers and the villagers.

“While further investigation is still ongoing, preliminary investigation revealed speed and reckless driving which led to loss of control were major contributory factors that led to the crash.

“The Sector Commander FRSC Plateau Corps Commander, Olajide E Mogaji, while appreciating those that reached out to us when the crash occurred, calls on commuters to desist from night trips, avoid excessive speed and dangerous driving. They were also called upon to avoid driving under the influence, and driving when sick or fatigued as they are the major causes of fatalities when road traffic crashes occur.

“Corps Commander Mogaji was embittered with the occurrence of the crash, as it occurred barely 12 days after 8 students of the University of Jos were killed in a similar way.

“He therefore calls on people to take their personal safety of utmost importance, he admonished the members of the public to call FRSC toll-free Emergency number *122* to report crashes or other road emergencies.”
