Sixteen-year-old, Musa Aigbe was the star attraction at the 19th graduation of Radiance High School, Festac Town, Lagos.
The school, founded by an educationist, Mrs. Ethel Menkiti, churned out 34 graduates who had completed their six-year secondary education.
The colourful event attracted parents, former students, chairman of the school, Engineer Chuba Menkiti, some members of the board of directors, executives of the parent-teacher association (PTA) and well-wishers.
Aigbe, from Owan East of Edo State, emerged the best graduating student, overall best in English, Mathematics and overall best in science.
His outstanding performance in internal school exams, Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and the May/June 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) was acknowledged by his teachers and applauded by parents and colleagues.
Aigbe told The Education Report that, in the 2022 UTME, he scored 273 (English 67, Maths 73, Physics 72 and Chemistry 61) and intends to study architecture at Bells University, Ota, Ogun State.
In WASSCE 2022, Aigbe, obtained: Data Processing A1, Further Mathematics A1, Civic Education A1, English Language B3, Mathematics B3, Physics B3, Chemistry B3, Geography A1, and Technical Drawing B3.
Aigbe appreciated his teachers for their contributions towards his performance, and his parents for investing in his education.
“I want to thank my parents for funding my education and their moral support. My teachers are part of my academic success story. I won several awards in the school and in external competitions,” he said.
Principal of Radiance High School, Mrs. B.C. Azoma-Chikwe, said the ceremony was designed to celebrate graduating students for concluding their six years of secondary education.
She explained that the 34 graduating students have been groomed by teachers and can face any challenge ahead. She tasked them to remain worthy ambassadors of the school.
Azoma-Chikwe disclosed that the students made the school proud with their outstanding performance in WASSCE and UTME.
She said parents were happy because their wards have justified their six-year investment in their secondary education. She also acknowledged the contributions of the proprietress, Mrs. Menkiti, to the development of the school.
Chairman at the event, Chief Jimoh Aigbe, urged the graduating students not to be carried away with the completion of secondary education, noting that there struggle has just started.
Specifically, he warned the students not to be carried away by what they see on campus in the universities but remain focused to achieve academic success.
He commended the principal and teachers for the outstanding performance of the students in their WASSCE, saying, “the school is doing well with provision of quality service.”
The PTA chairman, Mr. Francis Onoyima, said parents were elated with the management of the school on the performance of the students in the 2022 WASSCE.
Onoyima advised the students to be worthy ambassadors of the school and replicate their outstanding performance in the university.
Former head boy of the school, Mr. Ignatius Okoronkwo, who was the resource person at the event, acknowledged the investment of parents in the education of their wards. He urged the students to have a Plan B because of what the Nigerian education system is going through. He also advised them to avoid bad company in the university.
Earlier, in his sermon at the valedictory service, titled “Power to Prevail”, Pastor Stanley Uzoechina, advised the students to go into the world and excel.
The school management presented various prizes to the outgoing students as well as certificate of completion of six years of secondary education to 34 of them.
Students of the school entertained parents, the proprietress, teachers and well-wishers with cultural displays and choreography.
