President of the Nigeria Youth Organization (NYO), Comrade Duke Alamboye says that youths in the country have the responsibility to defend democracy, the rule of law and all human rights and fundamental freedoms in the region.
Duke observed that youths are the custodians of their own development and the role of governments is to create an enabling environment to facilitate their development.
The NYO president charged that for sustainable peace and stability in the country, young people must play their role in the development of the nation’s economy noting that investing in young people is the foundation for ensuring prosperity, peace and stability adding that several countries in the region have been directly or indirectly impacted by political violence and crisis, resulting in displacements and humanitarian emergencies.
He urged the youths to therefore, stand up for a better society; good governance, integrity, leadership, and other things that would Nigeria a better place.
According to him, youths must speak out against bad governance, social vices like drug abuse/addiction, rape, violence, cultism, and other things that would hinder the development of the family, society, and the nation.
“We must Act. We must not just leave our life to chances. We must take deliberate steps to improve ourselves in our academics, skills acquisition, leadership programmes, and community engagement”.
He spoke at an event in Abuja to mark the 25th Democracy Day in commemoration of President Bola Tinub’ administration.
Highlights of event was the presentation of merit awards to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu together with Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State and his Kano State counterpart Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Other recipients of the award include Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, Dr. Patrick Dakum, Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Human Virology Nigeria and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Office, Benue Investment and Property Ltd, Dr. Raymond Asemakaha and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), among others.
The Nigeria Youth Organization (NYO) was established on December 4, 1980 as a Trustee-based Youth Development and National Non-Organisation, aimed at unifying the goals of the millions and increasing number of youths who are independently sheltered in the country’s divergent socio-political and religious circles.
Equally too, the NYO aimed at providing a common and logical platform for the diverse youths of the country.
The organization strongly believes that for a nation to attain targeted goals of economic prosperity, social political stability and inter-religious harmony, there must be unity of purpose, which is in turn necessary for a purposeful leadership.
The event also witnessed the inauguration of the new National Executive Council of the NYO made up of Comrade Duke Alamboye, (President), Alhaji Abubakar Hassan (Vice president), Comrade Abimbola Olaniyi (National Secretary), Hannatu Danladi (National Treasurer); Miss Adeniyi Ann Folashade (National Publicity Secretary) among others.
