You’re hindering fair trial, Kanu’s lawyers accuse DSS

Lawyers representing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) before a Federal High Court in Abuja, has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of actively frustrating the prospect of a fair trial for their client.

This was contained in a press statement issued on Friday and signed by Aloy Ejimakor on behalf of the legal team. The statement was issued ahead of the scheduled hearing or trial of Kanu’s case on June 19th and 20th, 2024.

According to the statement, the DSS has continued to exhibit a “vested disrespect for judicial pronouncements” by refusing to allow Kanu’s legal team to meet with him as a team to prepare for the upcoming hearing.

The legal team stated that the DSS insisted that the lawyers must meet with Kanu separately, a situation that the legal team contended would “surely complicate the hearing on 19th June.”

The statement further condemned the DSS’s actions as an “executive self-indictment of the trial” and questioned the government’s true intentions, suggesting that they are only interested in a “sham trial” rather than a fair one.

The defence counsel also warned that if the DSS continued to block the avenues for a fair hearing, they would have no option but to resist any trial that goes against the tenets of the constitution.

They also called on the Attorney-General of the Federation to discontinue the case if the government is “apprehensive of the consequences of a fair trial.

“These antics are further evidence that the case against Mazi Kanu has no merit, hence the reason every avenue for a fair hearing is being blocked. If the AGF through the DSS are apprehensive of the fell consequences of a fair trial, then they need to do the needful by discontinuing this case without further ado. Otherwise, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team will resist any trial that is against the tenets of the constitution,” the statement noted.
