A three-day evangelical outreach in Akowonjo has turned a quiet Lagos neighbourhood into a beacon of faith, music, and humanitarian aid, with a fledgling church impacting nearly 2,000 lives.
The Grace Rock Church, just three months old and led by Pastor Funso Popoola, partnered with The Great Commission to host the Akowonjo for Christ Crusade from April 10 to 12, 2026. Held at Pertinence Group grounds behind the NEPA Filling Station on Tinuola Close, Animashaun Bus Stop, the event drew large crowds from the community and beyond.
Gospel artiste Tope Alabi brought the crowd to its feet, leading worship and reflection. Attendees described the sessions as transformative, blending worship with deep reflection.
Popoola, undeterred by his church’s youth, acted on what he called a divine revelation to address widespread stagnation, confusion, and unfulfilled potential. “Impact isn’t measured by age but by purpose and obedience,” he told reporters.
The crusade featured teachings on divine guidance, lifestyle reflection, mentorship, and discipleship, urging participants to seek spiritual support alongside personal effort. What elevated the event was its practical focus.
Free medical check-ups by professionals provided medications and referrals, filling a gap for residents lacking affordable care. Food distributions followed, embodying the church’s “give-back” ethos.
Popoola criticized churches that collect tithes without reinvesting in members’ welfare, calling for entrepreneurial training and economic empowerment to foster self-sufficiency.The church plans to expand outreaches to Surulere, Ikeja, Ajah, and beyond Lagos, viewing Akowonjo as its “Jerusalem.” Alabi’s presence also inspired local choirs, highlighting music’s role in ministry.
Testimonies poured in of renewed faith, healings, and hope. Popoola urged Nigerians, churches, and leaders to embrace collective responsibility for national challenges, blending faith with action. The crusade proved a young ministry can drive real change, blending spiritual revival with tangible community support.
