In line with its mandate to promote good governance across board, the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) has given the president – elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a charge to come up with the most competent persons (best brains) as members of his cabinet even as Nigerians look forward to a new administration.
Speaking at the Institute’s first Media brief in Lagos, the president/ chairman of Council, Mr. Taiwo Gbenga Owokalade, cautioned that Mr. Tinubu must shun religious sentiments, tribal and party differences while selecting people with whom he would lead the country.
ICSAN president maintained that it’s on the basis of meritocracy and competence that nations progress and not on cronyism, favoritism nor party affiliation as basis for leadership. According to him, Nigerians do not need any excuse why the incoming administration would not perform far above the government in power.
“Leadership is not entitlement and people should not be imposed on leadership positions as a compensation, but capacity to deliver desired result of every Nigerian must be considered.”
Owokalade who expects Tinubu to hit the ground running immediately after inauguration however bemoaned the level of excruciating economic hardship in the country. He charged the president- elect to begin immediately to design economic policies that would change the ugly narratives in the country as well as saddening perception held in the comity of nations against Nigeria. He added that any policy that would push Nigerians further into poverty and sorrow must not be mentioned.
“We want policies that would reverse the negative narratives like brain drain, the ‘japa syndrome’. We want to see our children stay here and do exploits. We want to see students remain in school and enjoy quality education. We want to see inflation coming down. We need a conducive business environment. We must grow in geometric progression not otherwise. The ugly narrative of poverty capital of the world and miserability of our people must be changed”
He charged State governments to mobilize investors to revamp their respective state power sector following the recent presidential assent to a bill which moved the power sector from Exclusive list to Concurrent.
“We hope Bola Ahmed Tinubu would keep his word of promise of entrenching government of national unity. We don’t expect less from him as he has promised. INEC must improve the electoral process, all we want to see is a better country where our potential would be maximised”, he added.
