The Young Christian Workers Movement of Nigeria [YCWM] Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has urged Nigerian youths to be active in politics to reclaim the lost glory of the nation.
The movement disclosed this during her 19th Worker’s Day celebration which was held at the Catholic Church of The Visitation, Festac Town, Lagos.
Speaking on the theme “Youth yearning to be engaged in nation-building”, the Lagos Archdiocesan President of the Movement, Ijeoma Ayaborsi said the importance of youth towards nations building should not be underrated.
Ayaborsi who was earlier misquoted by a section of the media, further applauded comrades who showed concern for the betterment of the nation.
This year’s celebration is more interesting and deserves some commendations considering the passion the youths showed in the 2023 national presidential election, Ayaborsi began.
She continued: I mean youths who often sit and watch the political and leadership affairs of their nation from the political gallery, came out with a sacred mission to retrieve the country from leadership snares and delusions, in a country where tribal loyalty is stronger than our common sense of nationhood, where excruciating poverty and starvation continue to drive more people into the ranks of beggars whose desperate struggle for bread renders them insensible to all feelings of decency and self-respect.
The youths came out to choose a leader, who will lead them to the part of growth, progress, prosperity, development, and genuine nationhood. I must say with all confidence, that the youths play a great role in nation-building because the youths of a country determine the future of a nation and that’s why today’s theme is so important to all Comrades of the Young Christian Workers movement.
This is because we are nation builders and problem solvers, we have a positive influence, and we are extremely ambitious. We can create an identity for ourselves and move the nation forward and we don’t back down or give up.
As youths, we must continue to speak up with facts against any wrongdoing or oppression by the government or fellow citizens capable of endangering sustainable democracy and the effective delivery of good governance.
The Fight for good governance is not over, but we must remember the law is the supreme instrument of the country which must be respected and no one is above the law. Therefore, we must be law-abiding citizens, and avoid taking the laws into our hands.”
The members also participated in a peace trek with placards urging employers and other state actors to uphold workers’ rights and welfare.
