Performing Musicians’ Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Ajegunle Chapter, Lagos, joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Music Day with a colourful event that brought together musicians, industry stakeholders and music lovers in Lagos.
The celebration took place at Rockbell Lounge and Club in Olodi Apapa, Lagos, and was hosted by the Ajegunle zone of PMAN with support from the Lagos State chapter of the association.
World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique, Make Music Day or Music Day, is an annual global celebration that encourages people to perform music in public spaces and communities. The event is observed in many countries as a way of promoting music, culture and artistic expression.
Speaking during the event, Chairman of PMAN Ajegunle chapter, Bright John Odede, popularly known as Sir Boj, described the 2026 edition as a special one due to the involvement of the Lagos State chapter and the introduction of awards for deserving personalities in the music industry.
According to him, the chapter has consistently celebrated World Music Day over the years, but this year’s event stood out because notable musicians and contributors to the growth of the music industry were recognised for their efforts.
Odede also used the occasion to encourage musicians who are not members of PMAN to join the association, stressing that unity among artistes would strengthen the industry and create more opportunities for practitioners.
He noted that members of the Ajegunle chapter have maintained peace and harmony, adding that cooperation remains key to the growth and development of the association.
Also speaking at the event, PMAN Lagos State Governor, Fatai Tijani, said the association remains the recognised body responsible for the regulation and coordination of music-related activities in the state.
He explained that Ajegunle was selected as the venue for the celebration because of its rich history of producing talented musicians who have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s music industry.
“Music is supposed to flow everywhere in the world, and that is why the Lagos State chapter has come to Ajegunle to celebrate World Music Day. We chose Ajegunle because of the immense talents that have emerged from this community,” he said.
Tijani added that the award recipients were carefully selected based on their contributions to music and their support for emerging artistes.
“They have served as sources of inspiration and strength to upcoming musicians. Recognising them is our way of appreciating their impact and encouraging others to follow in their footsteps,” he stated.
The event also featured performances by several artistes, including the music duo Sidney Guy, popularly known as Queen of Love, and Spyro Guy, also known as 360. The pair described World Music Day as an important occasion dedicated to celebrating music and its influence on society.
According to them, music plays a vital role in uplifting people during difficult moments and serves as a powerful tool for emotional healing and entertainment.
Their energetic performance thrilled the audience as they delivered a series of fast-paced songs that kept guests dancing throughout the event.
Another music duo, Damian Ekachukwu John and Desmond Orunchukwu John, also shared their thoughts on the significance of the day. They described June 21 as a date set aside globally to celebrate music and musicians while highlighting their commitment to producing Afrobeat, Hip-Hop and other contemporary genres.
The celebration ended on a high note with renewed calls for unity among musicians, greater participation in PMAN activities and continued support for talent development across Lagos and beyond.
