The Association of Dance Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (ADSPON) has said dance is a therapeutic tool for promoting mental health and overall wellness.

President of the association, Prof (Mrs) Mariam Asabe Iyeh, made this known in a special message to commemorate the 2025 World Mental Health Day, marked annually on October 10.

In her message entitled: ‘Dancing Towards Mental Wellness’, Iyeh urged Nigerians to embrace dance as a means of fostering mental and emotional stability. She noted that mental health is a fundamental human right that must be prioritised in everyday life.

“As we commemorate World Mental Health Day today, October 10, the ADSPON joins the global community in raising awareness about the importance of mental health and well-being.

“Mental health is a fundamental human right, and we must prioritise it in our daily lives. As a nation, we’ve faced numerous challenges, and we must support each other in maintaining our mental well-being.

“Research shows that dance can significantly improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. It promotes self-esteem, confidence, and social connections — essential components of overall well-being,” she said.
