World leaders condemn terror attack at Jewish event in Australia

Terror attack at Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia

UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, and other world leaders have condemned Sunday’s terror attack at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, where gunmen targeted a large Hanukkah celebration, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more.

Australian authorities declared the incident a terrorist act, describing it as a targeted antisemitic attack on the Jewish community during the first day of Hanukkah.

More than 1,000 people had gathered for the “Chanukah by the Sea” event organised by Chabad of Bondi when two gunmen opened fire from a nearby footbridge around 6:45 pm local time.

New South Wales Police confirmed that 12 people were killed, including one of the shooters who was fatally shot at the scene.

A second suspected gunman was taken into custody in critical condition.

At least 29 others were injured, including two police officers, and authorities are investigating the possibility of a third attacker.

World leaders condemned the attack in separate statements shared on X.

Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese described the attack as a “devastating terrorist incident”.

“This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, of celebration of faith,” he said in a video statement.

The PM further described the incident as “an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation”.

UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer said, “The news that the Bondi beach attack was an antisemitic terrorist attack against Jewish families at a Chanukah event is sickening.”

Starmer stated that the United Kingdom would always stand with Australia and the Jewish community.

Canadian PM, Mark Carney said he was “deeply horrified” by the attack which claimed 11 innocent lives.

“Canada stands with the Australian people and Jewish communities around the world in their grief, but also in their determination never to yield to terrorism, violence, hatred, and intimidation,” he said.

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi strongly condemned the ghastly terrorist attack.

Modi said, “On behalf of the people of India, I extend my sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Australia in this hour of grief.

“India has zero tolerance towards terrorism and supports the fight against all forms and manifestations of terrorism.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was “horrified” by the “heinous deadly attack,” extending solidarity to the Jewish community worldwide on Hanukkah.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog denounced it as a “cruel attack on Jews” by “vile terrorists,” while French President Emmanuel Macron labelled it an “antisemitic terrorist attack” and pledged to fight antisemitic hatred relentlessly.

The attack comes amid heightened concerns over antisemitic incidents in Australia since late 2023.

Investigations are ongoing, with the national terrorism threat level remaining at “probable.”
