Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed what he told his Croatian counterpart, Luka Modric after their dramatic World Cup round of 32 clash on Thursday night.
Portugal defeated Croatia 2-1 at BMO Field, ending Modric’s World Cup career and advancing Ronaldo’s side to the last 16.
Modric, who played five World Cups and captained Croatia to the 2018 final, appeared visibly distraught at full-time.
Ronaldo, who spent six trophy-laden seasons with Modric at Real Madrid, rushed to his side immediately after the match.
The 41-year-old Al Nassr forward said he comforted Modric, 40, and praised his longevity at the top level.
“I played with him for so many years, we are nearly the same age,” Ronaldo said.
“He’s a legend of football because he still plays very well and high quality. I said to him so many times congratulations for everything, I love to see you again, I wish you all the best for the next years of your career.”
After a goalless first half, Croatia led through an Ivan Perisic goal in the 53rd minute.
Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot in the 68th minute for his first-ever World Cup knockout stage goal.
Portugal substitute Goncalo Ramos headed the winner in stoppage time.
However, Croatia thought they had forced extra time in the 103rd minute through Josko Gvardiol, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside.
