World soccer ruling body FIFA has dismissed the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) protest regarding the eligibility of certain Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) players in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Playoff held in Rabat, Morocco.
The playoff match, played on 16 November 2025 at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium, ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time, with the DR Congo eventually claiming victory in a sudden-death penalty shootout. The result secured the DR Congo’s qualification for the next stage of the World Cup, leaving Nigeria and its supporters deeply disappointed.
In response to FIFA’s ruling, NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi confirmed that the federation has already begun the process of appealing the decision. “We are not satisfied with FIFA’s dismissal of our petition,” Sanusi said. “The NFF has immediately commenced the appeal process, and we remain committed to defending Nigeria’s interests.”

The NFF’s original protest, lodged shortly after the playoff, was based on alleged irregularities in the issuance of passports to several DR Congo players. The federation argued that the documentation allowed players who were ineligible under FIFA regulations to participate in the crucial playoff match.
The case has generated significant attention in Nigeria, with fans and football stakeholders calling for a thorough investigation.
Analysts note that Nigeria’s appeal, if successful, could have implications not only for the playoff outcome but also for the wider governance of player eligibility in African football.
This marks the latest chapter in Nigeria’s long-running efforts to challenge perceived injustices in continental football competitions. The NFF has vowed to pursue all available legal avenues to ensure fairness and accountability, signaling that the dispute is far from over.
As the appeal process unfolds, football enthusiasts across Africa and the world will be watching closely, awaiting the final verdict that could impact Nigeria’s campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
