France forward Michael Olise has set a new FIFA World Cup record for the most assists in a single tournament after registering his seventh assist during France’s dramatic 6-4 defeat to England in Saturday’s third-place play-off.
The historic feat was confirmed by Guinness World Records in a post on X shortly after the match.
“Michael Olise has just broken the record for most assists in a single World Cup – 7,” Guinness World Records wrote.
The Bayern Munich star surpassed the previous record of six assists jointly held by Brazilian football legend Pelé, who achieved the feat during the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.
Olise reached the milestone during France’s spirited second-half comeback against England at Miami Stadium. After Les Bleus trailed 4-0 at the interval, the 24-year-old played a pivotal role in their revival.
His first assist came in the 48th minute when he delivered a precise pass that allowed Kylian Mbappé to pull one goal back with a clinical finish inside the penalty area.
Eighteen minutes later, Olise produced another decisive contribution, threading a perfectly weighted pass to Mbappé on the edge of the box. The France captain unleashed a powerful finish to score his second goal of the evening and his 10th of the tournament.
Although France ultimately lost 6-4, Olise’s creativity stood out in one of the highest-scoring matches in FIFA World Cup history.
He finished the tournament with seven assists, establishing a new benchmark for playmakers on football’s biggest stage.
