Why the match matters
This is one of the biggest matches ever played by both nations.
Canada qualified for the knockout stage for the first time after finishing second in Group B, while South Africa reached the Round of 32 for the first time after finishing runners-up in Group A.
Victory will move either side into the last 16 and one step closer to an unprecedented World Cup run.
Road to the Round of 32
Canada finished second in Group B with four points.
Jesse Marsch’s side opened with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina before crushing Qatar 6-0. They eventually lost to Switzerland but still did enough to qualify.
South Africa recovered impressively after losing their opening match to Mexico.
Bafana Bafana drew with Czechia before stunning South Korea 1-0 to seal qualification under coach Hugo Broos.
World Cup history
Canada had never progressed beyond the group stage before this tournament despite appearing at previous World Cups.
As one of the tournament’s co-hosts, they are now chasing their best-ever World Cup finish. South Africa are equally making history.
The 1996 African champions had never reached the knockout stage before now despite several World Cup appearances.
Other News
Head-to-head record
The two countries have met only once. South Africa defeated Canada 2-0 in an international friendly played in Durban in 2007 through goals from Teko Modise.
Sunday’s encounter will be their first competitive meeting.
South Africa’s strengths
Hugo Broos has built one of the tournament’s most disciplined defensive teams.
Captain Ronwen Williams has been outstanding in goal, while Teboho Mokoena controls the midfield with his passing and work rate.
Evidence Makgopa provides the attacking focal point, with Relebohile Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis supplying pace and creativity.
Canada’s strengths
Canada possess greater attacking firepower. The expected return of captain Alphonso Davies will strengthen their defence and provide another outlet going forward.
Jonathan David remains their biggest goal threat, while Tajon Buchanan, Stephen Eustaquio and Cyle Larin offer pace, movement and experience.
Key battle
The midfield contest could decide the outcome. South Africa will attempt to frustrate Canada with a compact defensive shape before launching quick counter-attacks.
Canada, on the other hand, will look to dominate possession, press aggressively and exploit the pace of Davies and Buchanan down the flanks.
Chances of victory
Win probability
Canada: 50%
South Africa: 30%
Draw: 20%
Canada enter the match as slight favourites because of their stronger attacking options, home support and experience against higher-ranked opposition.
However, South Africa have already shown they can frustrate technically superior teams and remain one of the tournament’s surprise packages.
Prediction
Canada are expected to control much of the possession, but South Africa’s organised defence should make life difficult.
The co-hosts may eventually edge a closely contested encounter.
Predicted score
South Africa 1-2 Canada
