The Women In Energy Network (WIEN),  a gender advocacy group says focus is been given to the girl child in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics(STEM) as part of strategy  to grow the pool of women in the energy sector.

President of WIEN, Mrs. Eyono Fatai-Williams, stated this at the 2023 annual dinner and awards ceremony of the group held in Ikoyi, Lagos at the weekend.

She however expressed concern that the pool from which women are drawn within the energy space was closing up, hence there was the need to reinvent fresh strategies to continue to expand the numbers.

Fatai-Williams explained that part of the strategy by WIEN was starting from the cradle through the creation of the Super Nova Girl Initiative, a scholarship scheme targeted at supporting girls in STEM to achieve their respective dreams.

In addition to the scholarship scheme for the girl child, she said WIEN is in collaboration with corporate entities and in line with global discourse around gender inequality, diversity and inclusivity to reinforce what they are doing and support them in the journey whereby WIEN could support them to measure the progress and successes they have made.

Fatai-Williams, maintained further that WIEN is the diversity and inclusion partner for Nigeria Gas Association (NGA) to promote gender inclusivity for not only NGA but for the energy sector at large.

She added that over the past year, the WIEN has been committed to creating meaningful impact through a variety of initiatives. ‘‘One of our standout accomplishments has been the launch of the WIEN Woman Podcast. This platform allows us to amplify the voices of inspiring women in the energy sector, sharing their stories, insights, experiences, and expertise. The podcast has not only amplified our mission but has also served as a source of inspiration for many aspiring professionals.

Our commitment to knowledge sharing is evident through a series of Masterclasses and webinars organised by WIEN, and which led to the creation of the WIEN Newsletter, launched earlier in the year which has been a beacon of information and trends within our network and the industry.

Furthermore, The WIEN Mentorship Program stands as a shining example of our dedication to nurturing the next generation of female leaders in the industry. By fostering meaningful connections and providing guidance, we pave the way for success and create a supportive network that transcends boundaries.

In the spirit of unity and empowerment, let us take a moment to appreciate the bonds we have forged within this network. The Women in Energy Network is not merely an association; it is a family that nurtures talent, fosters mentorship, and encourages the next generation of women to reach even greater heights.

As we delve into the awards ceremony, let us remember that every nominee and award recipient represents a story of resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to driving positive change, and each accolade is not just a recognition of individual accomplishments but a celebration of collective triumphs. Together, we amplify our impact, making strides towards a more inclusive, diverse, and prosperous energy landscape.

Let us embrace this evening with open hearts, inspired minds, and a shared vision for a future where the energy industry is defined by equality, innovation, and the limitless potential of women,’’.
