Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike on Monday urged Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders to prioritise genuine reconciliation and unity ahead of the March 29-30 national convention, warning “fair-weather” members against using the party for personal gain then abandoning it.

Speaking at the party’s 107th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday, Wike congratulated the National Caretaker Working Committee for preparations, emphasising that reconciliation must be sincere. “When two brothers fight, there’s no use time for reconciliation,” he said, adding, “Continue to build on the unity of this party.”

He drew a firm line against opportunistic politicians: “I don’t want those who want to use us… for the purposes of having tickets. And then after that, you dump the party.” Wike stressed sincerity over personal ambition, declaring, “Let it be in sincerity, that doesn’t matter whether I have ticket or not, I believe I’m a member of PDP and I work for PDP.”

Warning against complacency post-NEC, he said, “After this NEC meeting, anybody that don’t show commitment to the convention, after convention, don’t come back and tell us that oh, I’m fully back. No, I will not accept that.” He insisted reconciliation requires “genuine sign” from all sides, rejecting “whayo trick” politics.

Wike criticised politicians who deceive constituents with election-time gimmicks like motorcycles and sewing machines, only to neglect them afterward. “That is not the way it’s suppose to be, right from the day we are re-elected we are suppose to be commending our people,” he stated.

Reflecting on his Rivers State governorship win without a sitting governor’s backing, he encouraged aspiring candidates: “Remove fear from your body, the moment you have fear you have already failed… Money is not everything in this world, money has limitation.” He mocked defected governors who lost despite resources, noting, “All those allocation that came are all gone so that’s to tell you that money is not everything.”

Wike took a swipe at Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, referencing a Bauchi statement: “Unfortunately I was watchin my friend before Seyi Makinde when he went to Bauchi he said that he had a meeting with me and the president… We also have the judiciary of Ibadan, that gave us exparte order.”

He contrasted contract business with politics: “Contract and politics are not the same thing. You can see the difference now.”
His remarks underscore PDP’s push for disciplined unity as it rebuilds ahead of the convention themed “inclusiveness, unity and renewal.”
