Turkey has introduced a streamlined visa process for Nigerian businessmen, removing the previous requirement for approval from Ankara. This development aims to enhance economic collaboration between Nigeria and Turkey, Ambassador Mehmet Poroy revealed during a visit to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Abuja.

“We have facilitated visa procedures for businessmen so they can travel easily. We no longer need to ask Ankara for their visa. At the embassy, we can give it directly under certain conditions,” Poroy stated.

He further revealed that Turkey has finalised arrangements to establish a Consulate General in Lagos, a move expected to boost trade, investment, and people-to-people connections between the two countries.

Although Poroy arrived nearly six months ago, he has yet to present his credentials formally. He expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and support from the FCT administration.

“Your services and institutions provide all the services we enjoy. Thank you for hosting us very comfortably. I believe I will have very nice and fruitful years here in Abuja as ambassador of Turkey,” he said.

The ambassador stressed Turkey’s strong commitment to expanding bilateral trade, highlighting the active roles of two commercial counsellors and ongoing partnerships with Nigerian ministries and institutions.

In response, Minister Wike welcomed the envoy and lauded the eased visa process, which had previously been a concern for Nigerian investors.

“Let me thank you for expediting the process of obtaining visas. It has been quite worrisome to Nigerians, particularly Abuja residents. Businessmen who want to go to Turkey will now not find it difficult,” Wike remarked.

He also expressed FCTA’s commitment to partnering with Turkey, especially Istanbul, to foster a favorable business climate for foreign investors.

“We intend to provide a free environment where citizens, without molestation, can carry out their businesses. Our relationship with Turkey has been very cordial, and we want to improve on it,” he added.
Wike assured continued support for initiatives aimed at strengthening ties between Abuja and Turkish cities.
The meeting was among Poroy’s initial high-profile engagements as he awaits the formal presentation of his credentials to President Bola Tinubu.
